Piedmont MA Podiatry Care

Toenail Infections in Piedmont MA

Piedmont MA Podiatry Care

When a patient has a toenail infection, the toenails can become yellowed and crumbly. The infection can also become quite painful. If you are experiencing problems with toenail infections, we urge you to visit us at our Premier Foot & Ankle Center, LLC. When here you will receive excellent Piedmont MA podiatry care from one of our expert foot doctors, just one of whom is Dr. Paul A. Cournoyer.

In order to properly diagnose a particular type of toenail fungus, it needs to be diagnosed through clinical cultures. If you have certain thickened or deformed nail plates, it can be due to trauma, or other conditions such as circulatory problems. When your nails are extremely unsightly, and appear to have a foot fungus, you will want to come to our podiatry practice for top-notch Piedmont MA podiatry care because it is very important that a toenail fungus is treated as the infection can spread to other parts of your body. This is particularly true for patients with certain medical conditions such as diabetes. Toenail infections can be stubborn and this can make them difficult to treat. Usually, the infection starts at the end of the toenail and progressively involves the remainder of the nail. Sometimes fungal nails can be painless and simply are more of a cosmetic problem than anything else. They are not contagious between people. There are many different types of treatment for toenail fungus. Our foot doctor will explain the different types of treatments that are available and useful in your particular case. Sometimes oral medications can be used, but these can have undesirable side effects. Before you go on some of these fungus medicines, a laboratory test may be needed to determine your liver profile, and again six weeks on. There are also various topical medications that are available for our patients, many of which require a prescription. Sometimes the nail is surgically removed and the underlying fungus infection is treated topically.
