An ankle sprain, in and of itself, is something that needs to be addressed in a timely fashion. But even more so because it is not always clear until you have been thoroughly examined that the problem is an actual sprain, versus the possibility that it may instead be a bone fracture, a ruptured tendon, a muscle strain, or a dislocation. Particularly in the case of a fracture, prompt attention is vital, since a hairline fracture can easily turn into a full one. Here at Premier Foot & Ankle Center, LLC, we're committed to the most efficient and quick healing of your ankle sprain. One of the most common injuries in the United States, ankle sprains occur as the result of the ligament being strained or stretched too far. Depending on the severity of the sprain, this can mean that it is merely stretched, or it could mean that the ligament is partially torn or even completely ruptured. As for symptoms, the most common one is also the most obvious: pain when you attempt to stand up or walk on the ankle in question. The more severe the sprain, the more pain will generally be present. As part of your exam, our Worcester ankle doctor will do a physical checkup of the area and may also take imaging to rule out other possible diagnoses. It is important to evaluate the extent of the injury, as well as the amount of time that has elapsed since it happened. Your ankle may need to be immobilized or the RICE method may be sufficient. This stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. In some instances, the use of an orthotic may be helpful, and physical therapy can improve and restore stability to your ankle. Surgery is not usually necessary, but in instances of chronic instability or when there is a history of recurring sprains, it may be recommended.

Let our Worcester ankle doctor assess your injury and identify the treatment most applicable. Call us today to book an appointment.
